A message to you from Sigel and Sue
The
hairdressing Industry can be a fun, creative, and exciting career.
It
can also be a very difficult industry.
This
is because there are already many trained and experienced
hairdressers already in the field.
How
is a new hairdresser going to compete in this
environment?
Most
schools only teach basic techniques in beauty school so either the
salon your work for will have to retrain you,
or
you will have to learn advanced techniques while
are in beauty
school.
This
is exactly the reason we started our advanced training center.
Just
picking the best school is only half of the solution,
the other half is
YOU!
YOU
have to have the drive, to be self-motivated,
to
have a spirit of "teachability",
and
to trust your instructors to teach you the newest techniques,
to
use the best equipment,
and
the best products available.
Check
out ALL the schools, find one that can provide you with the essential
skills you need to succeed,
and
stick with your dreams.
They
can come true.
We
are not the cheapest school, the fastest, or even the biggest, only
the BEST!
We
only wish to train top hairdressers, future salon owners, and future
salon managers.
If
you are not serious about your training, we are not the school for
you.
If
you have what it takes to succeed in the hairdressing industry,
let's partner up and make it happen.
Sigel
and Sue Shroy, MetrOasis A.T.C.

The Hairdresser Is...
It is
my considered opinion that the hairdresser
is
the most influential person in any community.
When
the public goes to a hairdresser,
something
happens to them.
They
feel safe, they relax.
The
Hairdresser knows what their skin is like
under
their makeup;
they
know their age;
they
don't have to keep any kind of pretense.
People
tell a hairdresser things
they
wouldn't dare confess to a priest
and
they are open about matters
they'd
try to conceal from a doctor.
When
people place their secret lives
in
the hairdresser's hands,
the
hairdresser gains an authority
few
other people attain.
I
have heard hairdressers quoted with complete conviction
on
art, literature, politics, economics, child care and morals.
I
tell you that a clever, thoughtful, ambitious hairdresser
wields
a power beyond the comprehension of most people...
- John Steinbeck -

Education
Our goal for the MetrOasis® A.T.C. is
to offer students an education that is unparalleled anywhere else in
the state.
We are affiliated with several
manufacturers to enhance our educational opportunities.
Our graduates will have the opportunity to train at various educational
centers across the United States.
These manufacturers provide us with the finest educational materials
and training available.
Because of these strong affiliations, our students will have first-hand
experience and a much deeper
involvement in the products they use on a day to day basis.
Employability
The MetrOasis® A.T.C. includes advertising ,marketing, retailing
strategies, merchandising,
and numerous other additional topics to our basic class.
We believe this additional training enhances our graduates
employability.
Our students also learn to use our computerized point-of-sale
procedures.
We believe the next few years will show a substantial increase in the
number of salons that are computer based.
Our graduates will already be in position to fill the demand when the
need arises.
Our graduates will also receive a letter of introduction, to aid in
their employment efforts signed by
F. Sigel Shroy, Director of the MetrOasis®
A.T.C..
Location
The MetrOasis®
Advanced Training Center is conveniently located in "Midtown"
Anchorage.
Our location provides us with several benefits.
We are easily accessible to most of the population of Anchorage.
We are also either on, or near, several public bus routes.
We are within walking distance of several support businesses, such as
restaurants, shops, stores, hotels, etc.
We are located on West International Airport Road between C and
Arctic.
We also have a Cajun / Creole cafe called Fire and Ice cafe,
where students can order lunch and espresso
drinks (at a discount) without having to leave the building.
This is especially great in the winter!

|
Thank You -
for considering the MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center
to provide for your educational and training needs.
It
is our passion to provide the highest educational experience for all
of our students.
In
plain terms, this means that we are not the easiest school in town.
If
you want easy, there are several better choices.
We
do our best to customize our programs to fit the individual needs of
each student (if at all possible)
while
at the same time, maintain uniform quality throughout our
training programs.
We
have some underlying philosophies that the school is founded
on.
One
of the most important of these philosophies is so important to us
that it has become our cornerstone.
We
call this " The Factor of R
".
The
secret of education is respecting the pupil.
Emerson (1803 - 1882)
Respect Yourself
It
is our belief that attitudes determine behaviors.
If
the attitude is there, the behavior will follow.
We
begin by respecting the students, and in return, we believe the
students will respect themselves.
This is one of
the reasons we established our training facility.
We
saw very little respect for the hairdressing student.
In
fact, in many circumstances we saw students treated like little
children or slave laborers.
It
is our desire that you will have the respect for yourself to
research the different training facilities available to you.
We
do not try to be the cheapest, or the fastest, or the largest
training center in town.
Just
the best!
We
hope that you will have this same goal for yourself.
Be
the best you can be.
This
is only accomplished by receiving the best training, in the best
facility,
with
the best companions, in the most realistic environment you
can.
Don't
let yourself settle for anything less.
There are three schoolmasters for
every body that will
employ them -
the senses,
intelligent companions and books.
Beecher (1813-1878)
|
Respect Others
It is our
passion to treat our clients, stylists, guests, and students
with respect. We require the same from you in return. We require that
clients and students maintain a "guest" status. Just as you wouldn't
have "free run" at someone's home you were visiting, you do not have
"free run" in the training facility.
If you select our school to attend
because you believe we can best provide the training you seek, then
please enjoy your training with us in a spirit of mutual respect and
appreciation. One of the main principals that we follow is borrowed
from the Japanese warrior tradition of O'su, or respect. This
means O'su to the Instructor, or Sensei, O'su to the Advanced Student,
or Sempai, and O'su to the other students. Have respect for your
training facility.
Respect the companions you train with because they
will be your professional peers after you graduate. The
MetrOasis® A.T.C. provides many functions for many people. It is
our intention to provide an atmosphere of quality that is
intellectually stimulating. Should you decide to disregard this
philisophy, you will be met where ever you are.
In other words, if you
need to speak with us in private,
we will meet with you in private.
If
you decide to "call us out" in front of a group of people
to embarass
us, we will address your comments in front of the group.
Lessons are not given, they are
taken.
-Cesare
Pavese (1908 - 1950 )
Reciprocity
Many
students enter a school environment with the attitude that they are
merely consumers.
To a degree our
students are consumers, and as such they need to
carefully evaluate our programs,
staff,
equipment, and various other considerations.
In
the final evaluation, however, each student must consider what
skills and training they will take with them.
Getting
a lot out of your training can only be achieved by putting a
lot of yourself into your training.
There
are many schools that operate in a “passive teaching
method.”
At
MetrOasis® we teach a “proactive method.”
That
is, each student “earns” their way to the next step of their
training.
The
training is the reward.
Our
belief is “Your success in the beauty industry is directly
proportional to the degree of commitment and effort you put into your
training !”
Some think that
selecting the best school is the trick, and once that
is done, they can relax and let the staff get the information into
their head.
This
is not how it works.
Once
you select the best school, you must then become the best student!
We
can teach you the skills you need to succeed, but you will have to
make the effort to make our techniques, YOUR techniques.
Every
technique we teach came from the person that is the best in their
field.
Every
technique will help put clients in your chair.

|
Q & A
Q.
Someone told me that it doesn't really matter which school you go to,
the training is all the same anyway. Is that really true?
|
A.
The most important decision you will make in your hairdressing career
is which beauty school you go to!
If you get bad
training to start with,
you can't make a
decent income to pay to travel somewhere else to learn what you should
have learned in your basic training.
If you think I'm
kidding, stop by the other schools and ask them to show you an
anti-geometric (volumetric) haircut,
or how to prevent
osmotic pressure damage when giving a perm.
Have them
demonstrate scissor-over-comb haircutting on short hair,
or demonstrate the
3-shears techniques. I can tell you what you will see.... a lot of
blank faces!
Some of the school
owners aren't even hairdressers, and most are not instructors.
Some have not even
been shampoo girls! Ask the other schools to show you their state board
exam pass rates.
They will probably
tell you they don't have them, but the state mails these to all the
schools.
They won't want to
show you because a lot of the schools are under 50% pass rate.
All of our
students pass the written stateboard exam on their first attempt. EVERY
ONE!
We've only had
about 10 or so students have to retake the practical exam since we've
opened.
This is hands down
the best performance in the state! This is one facet of our training
that makes us the best.
This also true of
our Esthetician Program.
We've had graduates from other schools who then have purchased facial
machines who brought them into us,
instead of the school they attended, so that we could show them how to
turn their machine on!
|
Q.
After I begin school, can I cut my friends hair at home?
Can I do facials
or skin care treatments at home?
|
A.
You should never do any hair (or
skin care) services away from school (or your salon).
Your home owner's
insurance
probably will not cover damages, and you don't have an instructor to
rely on if there is a complication.
This can be
grounds for dismissal if the student persists in this behavior.
(Not to mention
that this practice is not professional nor is it legal.)
|
Q.
What if I don't meet one or more of the requirements but I really want
to go to your school? |
A.
The director can waive specific requirements, however, these screening
procedures are designed to protect
MetrOasis and our students.
We will not accept a student that we feel has little chance of
graduating or being a great hairdresser.
These decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. Come on in and
explain your situation. |

|
Q.
I haven't had any previous hair (or skin care) training.
Can I still start school
without any experience? If not, where can I get the basic training so
that I can go to your school? |
A.
I get that question a lot. You don't need any previous training to
be accepted into our facility. We offer the basic training you are
asking about. After you graduate, you can get more advanced training.
You may choose to get a part-time job at a salon as a receptionist or
some other position, but it is not required for you to be accepted into
a school. |
Q.
I've had friends in other schools that had to spend additional
money
buying additional equipment or classes before they could graduate. How
much should I expect to spend for "the extras" at MetrOasis®? |
A.
I really hate that! I've always considered that a "tacky" and
dishonest business practise. Some schools even require their students
to purchase the styling products they use on the school's clients! How
cheap and tacky is that? Our price is complete. Even your pencils,
pens, and paper are included. The only additional cost you may
have is
replacing or repairing something that you broke or lost, or for
additional lab fees if you are wasting school materials (and you have
already been warned several times).
At many other
esthetic schools you will not only have to buy "additional" equipment
or classes, you'll have to buy ALL of your equipment on top of
the cost of the school. We know of no other school in Alaska (or the
rest of the country for that matter...) that include a multi-function
machine
with their program!
|
Q.
Why is there so much difference in the price of student kits from
school to school?
|
A.
Short answer, because the quality of the kits vary so much from
school to school. Many of the schools use the same cheap student kits
and merely charge different prices. I didn't want to have a "student
quality" kit. I have access to the same equipment vendors that the
other schools do. I could have designed our kits to be the same as the
other schools. We use only "stylist quality" equipment. I'm not
trying
to have a school just like that other school that copied that other
school. Our main goal is quality. This includes quality equipment. I
would rather explain the price of our student kit to you one time,
rather than constantly having to explain to you why your equipment is
falling apart. I believe that you should learn with, practice with, and
become proficient with, the actual equipment that you will be using in
a salon. I prefer this to learning with "student quality" equipment,
and then having to buy "stylist quality" equipment before you can work
in a salon successfully. In the long run, it saves you money using the
best! I also don't believe in having any "hidden" costs like some of
the other schools do. Many other schools don't list all of the expenses
up front. Our price includes everything you will need, and even
includes free tanning and coffee. When you find out all the costs, the
level of training, and see the equipment, you will understand what a
bargain we really are. |
Q.
Do you have a printed brochure or a
catalogue that you can mail me?
|
A.
No. We used to
provide a printed brochure, but we have decided that making this
information available on our web site was more practical. Our printed
catalogues are for students that have been accepted into the program.
We accept one student from about every twenty five contacts we have.
This means that we would have to mail out twenty five catalogs for each
student we accept. By providing this information on our web site, you
can view our web page, or print your own copy. This way, we can spend
more time with our students instead of becoming a part-time printing
company.

|
Nondiscrimination Clause
The
MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center practices a no discrimination
policy on the basis of race, creed, religion,
country or area of origin and/or residence in its employment,
admissions, financing, and graduation.
You may encounter different life-styles while you are attending classes
at our training facility.
Just as you would not want anyone to treat you differently because of
your personal views or your life-style,
others want you to have the same respect and courtesy for their views
and/or life-style.
We expect the same consideration from our students.
Students have a small area at their station for photos and any seasonal
decorations.
The school does not make students celebrate any holiday they wish not
to,
and staff members will not be forced to celebrate any holiday they wish
not to.
Vulgar language, profanity, and swearing will not be tolerated by
students OR clients.
Student Counseling
The
MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center staff is available for student
counseling by making an appointment,
and informing the staff of the nature of the counseling need.
This (advance) information will help us to determine how to best to
proceed in this area.
This counseling request may be school related or personal.
We will help if we can to eliminate any situation that may prevent any
student from successfully completing their course.
(If the counseling request is of a sensitive nature, the staff may
require that a witness be present).
Students are also free to ask our advice after they graduate regarding
any hair industry related topic.
|
Security
The
MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center seeks to provide you with an
environment that is safe as well as intellectually stimulating.
Because no security system can completely eliminate loss of property
through theft or vandalism, it is expected that each member of the
campus community will participate by contributing their alertness to
the safety and security of the MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center.
Please assist by valuing our facilities,
respecting the personal property of others and reporting any strange or
suspicious circumstances you observe.
We
will not give out student information without the student's prior
approval.
If a family member or a friend calls asking for information regarding
one of our students,
and we are not familiar with that person, the information will not be
given out.
If any student wishes us to provide information to any third party,
they should make arrangements prior to the incident.
Each student is assigned a locker and key to secure their personal
belongings.
We advise you to keep all personal items locked securely at all
times.
In addition, your personal cart should be locked unless you are
providing a service.
Each student should use their own equipment and respect your fellow
classmates belongings.
Please do not borrow another students' equipment.
Any personal property left out may be thrown away!
This includes food and plates left unattended in the break area.
We require students to clean equipment immediately after a service and
allow it to dry in your cart or locker.
Student parking is less than 100 feet away, and is highly visible,
however if it is dark,
we suggest that students use the buddy system while coming and going to
their cars.
We've never had a security problem and we want to keep it
this way.
The training facility is equipped with smoke detectors, closed
circuit video cameras, and a security system.
If the alarm is sounding, DO NOT ENTER THE BUILDING!
There is nothing in the training center worth risking your
safety.
|
|
Check out ALL the
Schools
We encourage prospective students to investigate the other schools
before enrolling as we will not usually accept transfer students!
Ask to see the school's equipment, tour the facilities, talk with a few
students
(if the school will allow it), and look at the text books and materials
that will be used.
Let us know what you think.
We think that we are by far the best choice in Alaska!
(Be sure to ask what the "final" price is after all of the fees
are added up!)

Performing Services on Family, Friends and
Other Students
Students
are welcome to invite members of their immediate family to the training
facility for beauty services at a minimal product charge only.
This must be approved (in advance) by the floor instructor and if
possible during "slow time," (not Saturdays).
The charges for members of a student's immediate family will be the
"product charge" posted in the dispensary and at the front desk.
Work on other students may be performed with the (advance) approval of
the floor instructor.
This same policy will apply to services performed by one student on
another unless the student is practicing this particular service as
part of their current practical study (determined by the floor
instructor).
In this case there will not be a product charge.
Students must limit the number of services they have performed on
themselves to two per month to insure that adequate time is spent
on practical applications.
Statement of
Purpose, Goals and
Objectives
MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center is the brainchild of
Sigel & Sue Shroy.
Sigel originally moved to Anchorage, Alaska, about a decade ago to be
the director of a major beauty school.
After noticing how poorly most of the students and clients were
treated, and being unable to find an already existing excellent school
to purchase, Sigel and Sue opened the MetrOasis® Advanced Training
Center.
Different by Design. MetrOasis® is actually a
hair salon, a beauty school, a continuing educational facility, a
tanning salon, a retail beauty products store, a professional beauty
supply, a product manufacturor, a Cajun / Creole cafe, and an espresso
shop.
Our efforts are diversified into related time
segments of a hairdresser's career. Our first segment offers
basic hairdressing training to those without prior training. The
completion of this program qualifies the student for testing by the
Alaska State Board of Barbers and Hairdressers. This
training is performed by on-staff personnel, guest speakers, educators,
and guest artists.
Our second segment provides advanced
training to further individual skills in particular areas of
interest.
This is usually in the form of intensive two-day to five-day
courses.
This training is performed by on-staff personnel.
This phase could be viewed as a "trade school-college."
Our third segment encompasses all our continuing
education courses and programs. This segment offers established
hairdressers access to ongoing educational and motivational classes and
workshops. An attitude of continual learning is a strong
component to success in this ever changing industry, and we provide a
variety of educational opportunities. In this segment of our training,
we have re-trained several stylists that didn't shop well for their
beauty school, and as a result they attended other schools that didn't
do a good job preparing them for the salon industry. We were able to
provide the training they were lacking in the education from thier
previous school, and instill in them a greater confidence in the work
they perform.
Finally, our fourth segment, we maintain a highly
trained staff of hairdressers and educators. This is the opportunity to
"give something back" to the industry.
We really enjoyed our field trips to Paris in March
of 2002 and March 2004, and plan to do several more of these trips. We
are looking in to trips to France, Italy, Germany, and England. We told
you this was an exciting industry!

We have very ambitious
goals,
and we plan to achieve these goals with the help of several
of the companies that we have affiliated ourselves with.
These affiliations allow us to offer many benefits and services to both
our students and clients that have been previously unavailable.
All of the companies that we are associated with are strong leaders in
continuing education. Some of the past educational events we've hosted
or sponsored are:
* Charlie Massucci, national educational director
for Allegretti Color USA.
Color and Highlighting class. (From
Philadelphia)
* Robert Cromeans, Leader of Paul Mitchell "Core
Group" design team.
Advanced Haircutting (From San Diego)
* David Lagadi, Alaska's balding and thinning hair
expert.
* Kathy Lou Kronenberger, Northwest Regional
Director
Advanced Hairstyling and Product Use
(From Los Angeles)
Education. Our goal for the MetrOasis®
A.T.C. is to offer students an education that is unparalleled anywhere
else in the state. We are affiliated with several manufacturers to
enhance our educational opportunities. Our graduates will have the
opportunity to train at various educational centers across the United
States. These manufacturers provide us with the finest educational
materials and training available. Because of these strong
affiliations, our students will have first-hand experience and a much
deeper involvement in the products they use on a day to day basis.
Employability. The MetrOasis® A.T.C.
includes advertising,
marketing, retailing
strategies,
merchandising, and numerous other additional topics to our basic class.
We believe this additional training enhances our graduates
employability. Our students also learn to use our computerized
point-of-sale procedures. We believe the next few years will show a
substantial increase in the number of salons that are computer based.
Our graduates will already be in position to fill the demand when the
need arises. Our graduates will also receive a letter of
introduction, to aid in their employment efforts signed by F.
Sigel Shroy, Director of the MetrOasis® A.T.C..
The MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center is
conveniently located in "Midtown" Anchorage. Our location provides us
with several benefits. We are easily accessible to most of the
population of Anchorage. We are also either on, or near, several public
bus routes. We are within walking distance of several support
businesses, such as restaurants, shops, stores, hotels, etc. We
are located on West International Airport Road between C and
Arctic. We also have a Cajun / Creole cafe called Fire and Ice
cafe, where students can order lunch and espresso drinks (at a
discount) without having to leave the building. This is especially
great in the winter!
